Narrative writing for kids

Zadie has a superpower, Zadie can write stories and they come true! Now, not everyone has this superpower but writing is a skill that we all can learn.

So this weekend, keeping up with the theme of the book we are currently reading, we asked the group to to write a piece of story. Narrative writing is essentially story writing and there are many ways to practice narrative writing. Now, often starting to write, staring at a blank piece of paper can be daunting for kids so we put together an activity sheet for the group where they can follow the writing prompts and tell their own story.

Narrative writing typically follows main features such as a plot, a setting, a character, the main problem and a theme. All these features allows the author to tell a story. We kept the session light and asked the group to follow the writing prompts that remind the group to:

  1. Set the scene.

  2. Create your character.

  3. Introduce the problem.

  4. Introduce the solution.

  5. Write an ending to the story.

  6. Title the story.

  7. Tell your story.
