Ekadeshma Book Club is available for kids aged 8 - 12. We meet monthly in a group of 6-8 children. Our goals for initiating Ekadeshma Book Club are:
Build and foster a reading habit in kids.
Enhance reading skills, vocabulary comprehension and speech usage.
Introduce reading as a social activity and create a fun environment where kids can form lasting connections with books and people.
Provide a safe and inclusive safe space for kids for discussions and engage in activities that are focused on building a growth mindset.
Promote opportunities in kids to practice public speaking and leadership role
Encourage kids to explore various genres, literary styles and authors.

Ekadeshma Book Club reads
Runt is a heartwarming tale of eleven-year-old Annie Shearer and her adopted stray dog with remarkable talent, Runt. This is a simple, feel-good, clever and funny story. The book is full of passionate and heat-warming characters with lots of life lessons to take on board such as the value of companionship, friendship, kindness, discovering and pursuing your passion, and the significance of hard work in achieving results.
A classic science fiction novel from the 1870s, this story follows German Professor Leidenbrock, who is convinced that volcanic tubes reach the center of the Earth. Alongside his nephew Axle and their guide Hans, they descend through the chimney of an extinct volcano embarking on an incredible and harrowing journey to uncover the secrets at the Earth's core. The story takes the reader to a third realm imagination that will take the readers to the next level height of adventure.
“The BFG” is another classic beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl. One late night, an eight year old Sophie cannot sleep and looks outside her window to see a Giant! Sophie tries to hide but it’s too late and the Giant scoops Sophie out of her room. Despite the rocky start, Sophie and the BFG soon starts on a journey of friendship. The book again has beautiful themes of friendship, standing up to the bullies and a lesson on “two wrongs does not make a right”.
A Glasshouse of Stars is a heartwarming story about Meixing Lim, who navigates her new life in an unfamiliar land. Feeling overwhelmed by her surroundings, including her home dubbed Big Scary, she confronts insecurities about her second-hand shoes, language barriers, and difficulty connecting with classmates. Her refuge is a glasshouse in the garden, symbolizing her memories and imagination. The book encourages readers to reflect on big emotions and self-identity.
Zadie Ma and the dog who chased the moon by Gabrielle Wang is a book about a girl who desperately wants to have a dog of her own. Among other messages, the story of Zadie Ma is about friendship, courage, kindness and belief in the power of storytelling and imagination. Most importantly, the book is a fun read for children and the activities can be tuned to suit the different age groups. So let’s dive right in!

Charlotte’s Web is a classic book with strong themes and lessons on Friendship, Love, Kindness, Innocence, and Adapting with Change. The book is also filled with opportunities to take a pause and workshop all sorts of exercises such as comprehension and vocabulary strategies, developing emotional intelligence and general reflection.

This book is enchanting, thought-provoking, and rich in scientific concepts, exploring profound themes like grappling with deep emotions such as loss and disappointment, self-discovery, and the importance of remaining true to oneself.
Emil and the Detectives is a joyful read about a boy, Emil who gets robbed while travelling alone. But the thief soon learns that he had messed with the wrong target as Emil befriends a group of boys who come to Emil’s rescue. Emil and the Detectives has themes of friendship, teamwork and working towards a goal and plenty of opportunities for fun interactive activities!
